I think your assessment of the case is correct. You probably will have to adjust the strike plate slightly to allow the striker to fully engage. This may entail plugging the mounting holes and re-drilling to make the adjustment. In some instances where the mis-alignment is very slight I have just removed the strike plate and opened the throat up somewhat with a metal file. Good luck.
