fireplaces besides being a fire hazard creat lots of smoke, you know unburned hydrocarbons. green house gasses, and your would have to cut down trees for the wood, so you could not hug them trees anymore

why dont you use that soalr panels to storage batteries for the lighting

i would think house built to modern "green" standards would not have fireplace

remember besides of keeping green, you have to pass local building codes and common sense safety issues

like candles are the leading cuse of house fires, smoke from open fires(fireplaces) can lead to asthmia(breathing problems) in childern. so keep it green but be smart and dont expose occupants to health and safety hazards

other ideas

composting toilets
recycled building materials
natural landscaping(so sprimkler system)
rainwater collection for bathing from roof runoff
wind power generators
useing methane gas scavanged from cesspol for cooking fuel
recycled motor oil frrnace for heating system
place to park bycycles
garden to grow fruits & vegitables(use your compost)

others will surely chime in to help you and hopefully not thun this into a dp bash
