they sell at hardware/[lumbing supply a shower socket set that is deep sockets(6 inch deep) made just for removing shower stems

its under 10 bucks for the whole set, should not be a problem that you stripped the corners

or you may try a basin wrench that grabs on the flats not the corners and that also is made about 15 inches deep

once yo break the hold it will unscrew easy, its that first 1/4 trun that gives trouble
