Restoration/cleaning of wooden floorings

Most of what I hear about is sanding of wooden floors. However, what I am searching for is how the antique restores clean the floors. My floors are random width pine boards that are just black with age and grime. I don't want to take any wood away and would like to do what they do in historical houses. Another question is for a friend who has the 1920's type herringbone wood floor. Has anyone successful redone this type of flooring either? Thanks ahead for your help :)
