Need advice on taking out an exterior door to make it a wall.

Posted by woodyak on February 12th, 2004 09:33 AM

I'm in the process of redoing my kitchen. There's a door to the deck that is in the way of my future cabinets so I need to wall it off. I'm comfortable with removing the old door, framing it out, and putting up the drywall and plywood on the outside. I'm kind of sketchy on the rest. I'm planning on putting insulation between the framing and having a pro do the drywall finish work. I'd like to put up the siding myself. We currently have Cedar shakes that are a bit weather worn. So my questions are:

- What do I need to do to the exterior wall to prepare for installing the cedar shakes?
- How should I seal the edges of the plywood?
- Any tips on making sure they align properly?
- Since the siding will be brand new, does it make sense to try and match the other shingles with a stain?
- Any good web links for me to read up on before take on this task?
