Beam Installation

Posted by SteveS. on February 13th, 2004 08:44 AM

Hello, We are having a dormer added to our house. Before the dormer can be added, a beam on the first floor needs to be replaced. The contractor is proposing replacing the current 2x8 beam with a double 9 1/2" LVL beam, over a span of about 10'.

The cost he is proposing is $2600. This includes buying the beam, cutting a sheatrock ceiling, adding the beam, and replacing the ceiling.

Does this seam reasonable? I know it's hard to say without looking at it, but I would appreciate any opinions. I know a 20', 9 1/2" beam costs $62.00, so the $2600 seems very excessive to me.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Steve
