Follow up to First Question

Thanks for replying. I am completely stumped now. The light is from Hunter, there are 5 blades, then a housing hanging from that, with 4 lights out the side and a fan pullcord below.

I have it so that there are two wires hanging down to the pullcord area. A circuit tester shows a live circuit. I bought (another) new pullcord swtich. When I take the two ends of this and hold to the two wires, there is still no light, and pulling the cord doesn't start the fan. The ends are not labelled, but I have tried both combinations. I just can't see what could be happening... if the circuit is live, shouldn't "finishing" the circuit with a switch turn the lights on?
