If it's mostly soot, try an oven cleaner, like Easy-Off. If it's paint, try a tough paint remover, like Strypeze (sp??). The latter worked wonders for me.
It's messy as the devil, and needs lots of newspapers and water rinses, but the result is fabulous. Be patient.
