Consider using this white melamine shelving that can be bought. It comes in 12" and 16" with holes predrilled for adjustable shelving. you can build it in separate modules and stack them side by side like your kitchen cabinets are.
I am going to put some around 3 sides in a whole basement room. Since I don't want cluttered shelves that collect dust, I am going to put doors on some of them with European hinges. Using the wider boards, each module will probably end up being around 31" wide although I may go with the 12" for doors and be around 23" wide for books since it would be hard to add support to the board if the shelf is too wide. You can also add a toe kick at the bottom.
Look in the January workbench magazine for ideas. Your choice of woods and finish depend upon your location and woodworking skills and equipment. Good luck.
