spring and seal

For many cartridge units (delta, peerless) the spring rests on in the valve below the rubber seal and keeps the seal in contact with the stem cartrige. The spring does not fall into the pipe because the base has a narrow opening at the bottom. It should not go through the seal. Post back with the model faucet you are repairing and get a better guess.
