I have seen it done, done it myself and have instructions from TLC and Discovery.
Sand tops of counters well
Remove dust
Use Kilts paint for base cover (I had mine tinted the base color that I was painting the actual counter) Let this cure for at least 24 hours.
Use paints that are used on cement floors for counter top decorating.
different styles will depend on how you like them.
I did mine in a stone look.
I painted the base beigh with kiltz, then I painted a beigh color on top
I cut sponges into different shapes of rock shapes
I had different buckets of color, terra cotta red, brown, black, and beigh
Take your sponge shape, dip in the beigh, then brush on the sponge with a small brush the other colors that you want the "stone" color to be to be
Press onto the counter top, and continue all around the counter top, with different shapes and different colors in the array that you have. Its' like doing potatoe impressions on the counter top with multiple colors.
Let counter top dry throughly
Take a sander with a round barrel attached...Sand Grooves into the counter top, basically your cutting out around the shapes of the paint to make it look like stones have been inlaid (you may need about 6 sanding barrels)
Take brown paint and paint around the grooves for "mortar" look
Polyeurithane 6-8 coats
Let try throughly
Marble look can be done by taking a piece of ragged chip board..about 12 inches in length.
Follow steps above, only when you put the base paint on that you want the counter to be such as tourqoise, let that dry. Get a glaze, such as black, and spread in sections on the counter top.
Take ragged chip board and drag thru the glaze to make swirling shapes such as marble or ripples or whatever you would like...its your countertop, be adventurous..Make sure you use 6-8 coats of Polyeruathane on top of your countertop after you are done painting. Let each coat dry completely before applying next coat.
I have seen both applications done and its beautiful. Make sure you have lots of trivets on hand for hot pans as you dont' want to put hot pans on the poly coatings.
I hope this helps!! If not, go to Moseynme.com which is Franks site, and look at what he's said or you can go to Discovery.com and look for Christopher Lowell as he's done some countertops also.
