I signed a contract to buy a house ... it's a re-sale of a 14 month old house ... the homebuilders warranty has just expired. I accompanied my home inspector on his inspection. I looked closely and discovered the hardiplank siding installed with rectangular headed nails (look like interior finish nails) with nail heads about 1/8" by 1/16". Some nails appear to be rusting already. The nails were obviously shot with a pneumatic gun; next to each nail head the skin of the siding was perforated by the nail driving rod. So, there's a small, rectangular headed nail with an equal size hole next to it. I believe it's installed improperly. My question is, what are the implications of such an installation? Is the siding at risk of being blown off in high winds because of reduced holding power of no-headed finish nails? Do the unfilled holes present a risk of siding failure from continued penetration of moisture and the freeze/thaw cycle? Is this a house I want to avoid? (By the way, my housing inspector was unfamiliar with hardiplank and I was teaching him as we did the inspection together. All this for only $595.)
