I think I need to explain a bit more about the problem.
The part that is attached to the garage door and moves along the track is still there. But it slides freely on the track right now. That is because the "sled" that the part that is attached to the garage door (which has the rope to release) is not on the track anymore. It fell right off and I found it on the floor of the garage.
But for now, I'll go with your advice and remove the track from the garage door end and try to push everything back into place.
