Bedroom/Bathroom lights dim

When my wife plugs in an iron, curling iron or hair dryer into the bedroom circuit the lights in the bathroom or bedroom dim.

The home is only 1 year old. The electric company that installed all the electric for the builder claims that it is normal.

I have lived in quite a few homes and never had this problem. Is it normal or what causes it?
