Foundation sinking

Posted by LeeAnn on February 24th, 2004 12:06 AM

We recently tore off our rafters and put up "room in attic" trusses to turn our ranch into a cape cod. The original house was built in the 60s, but a few years ago we replaced everything except a little lumber in the walls and the ceiling joices due to powder post beetles. (we didn't know the extent we would have to replace, should have tore down and restarted) The floors have never been especially level, so when we noticed some uneveness, not much thought was given. Until tonight. Through the linoleum in the kitchen we can feel the tongue and groove of the plywood where it is seperating. I checked all of the outside walls and all the corners are cracked. Come to find out the original foundation is only about 3 feet deep in clay soil, apparently the heavier trusses are too much weight. I've looked at foundation repair companies and they look so expensive. My husband talked about digging around the house a pouring additional concrete, but is afraid of what might happen when we take the support of the soil away.
