What is the best way to clean soot residue from matte painted walls? The soot is from an open door propane gas fireplace that the damper malfunctioned and closed, but the fireplace remained on for several hours. Ideally we would wish not to repaint, but even if we have to, the walls should be thouroughly cleaned to allow for new paint anyway. Suggestions?
