In reply to COMPLETE HEAT NIGHTMARE by Kirk Goodell on February 26th, 2004 11:05 AM [Go to top of thread]

Kirk - I also have decided to do my own maintenance after having poor-but-expensive service calls that did not solve the problems. I just checked the ignition points and decided that they are ok - also replaced the motor gaskets. I now have three $7 temp meters on my HM30-150 - (1) next to primary limit switch, (2) next to secondarylimit switch and (3) next to thermistor.

My water temp is set at 135f. Since I replaced the Taco pump cartrige ($35 cost in 10 minutes) the next-to-thermistor measurement has stayed where it belongs. The house is around 2600 sq ft in southern Ohio. After my tweaks to the system, I get acceptable hot air out of the registers and the house heats up quickly.

I have been disappointed that there are not better diagnostics with the system. The Taco pump can go out and you would never know it other than the system overtemping periodically - at 5am when you are trying to get a shower in the middle of the winter. This happened about once per month, typically for the past 3 years on our 1997 installation.

Good Luck! My system is running well now (my fingers are crossed) I have a small supply of cartriges and relief valves just in case.
