I painted a faux granite finish over my formica kitchen countertop and it looks amazing. I protective coated it with 7 coats of water based poly and I haven't had one paint chip or flaking in 6 years. You must use a non porous primer like kilz otherwise the paint will not adhere to the surface.
Try it, it's cheaper and very resilient compared to the expensive choice of replacement.
