A suspended ceiling using the tracks would be the most common and would certainly fit most of your requirements. I do recall seeing something on one of the home improvements shows about a fabric that was suspended from track or rails that went around the outside of the room. Sorry, I don't rememeber more that this but perhaps it might jog someone else's memory.
One other thought is that auditoriums with sound problems use small suspended ceiling panels. These are hung from pipe and usually at an angle to bounce the sound from an orchestra or performer into all the parts of a theater. These are called "clouds" by theater people. It wouldn't seem too difficult to have angle iron fabricated into rectangles or even circles as a "frame", suspend the frame with painted pipe and floor flanges, fill the frame with 1/4" plywood joined at sheet edges with "H" tracks, and then the acoustical panels stapled to the bottom of the plywood for a "cloud". You would want to have the structural strength, etc., checked by reliable people.
