painting fireplaces

I have a late 40's home that has a fireplace set in a roman brick wall. It is quite ugly and my decorator friends are hounding me to paint it. I have mixed feelings, but don't like the dark look it casts over the entire room.

Is it still taboo to paint a fireplace?
