I work for an HVAC contractor Posted by Jill B., Arizona on March 3rd, 2004 01:34 AM In reply to ComfortMaker Furnaces & AC?? by Lorrie on March 3rd, 2004 12:03 AM [Go to top of thread]

What I would worry about is that the comfort and safety of your home is greatly effected by your HVAC system.
I don't know anything about Comfortmaker, but I wonder who'll you'll get to warranty the system should something go wrong as most licensed HVAC contractors won't (or can't) can't do warranty work unless they supply and install the eqpmt. In the cases where we install "owner supplied" eqpmt, we'll only cover "the work", not parts or equipment failure.
The second thing to think about is is the system adequate for your home? In order to be efficent and adequately provide heat and cooling, is the tonage (of A/C) and BTU's (heat) sufficient for the sf of your home? Is your ductwork adequate? How are your gas and water lines? Is this the best system for your home and climate?
Finally, not sure where you live, but in AZ it is illegal for anyone who is not a licensed HVAC contractor to buy or sell cooling systems (evaps ae ok) because of laws concerning the use, control and release of refrigerant. Since most suppliers won't sell an A/C system to an unlicensed agent... I wonder where "the co-worker" intends to get it and who is irresponsible enough to "make a buck" that they don't care if they lose their license? (and admittedly, this really bothers me... and it is something you should investigate before buying)
Last comment... last month we pulled a "brand new unit" (was 12 years old - just sold as "new") from an eldery couple's home. They "got a deal" from some "small-time-Joe" and really got a cracked heat exchanger. They could have died from CO poisoning because they trusted someone who defrauded them - and all they were trying to do was spend their retirement dollars wisely. 8-(
Most HVAC contractors will be happy to give you a free estimate. Get 3-4... see what they recommend. Is the system you're considering comparable? Ask if any will install "owner supplied" eqpmt and what the terms of warranty will be? And be sure you ask the co-worker how warranty issues if they arise will be handled.
One one hand, you may get a great deal and be pleased with your decision. But in MY OPINION, you should be very cautious and very thorough since saving a few bucks "now" can be very costly later.
