Instead of painting it or covering it with a panel, why don't you just get some really pretty thick and different sized candles (usually white) and you can place them inside. I have even seen a special candle holder that fits fireplaces. It is really decorative, and gives it a nice look. Unfortuantely, you cannot light them due to the chimney not working, but they look quite nice.
