Quite often the major objetion to flourescent lighting is the character of the light that makes it "office like". The most common flourescent tubes are have a color temperature 4100 oK (marked SP41 or cool white). These produce the cold white light that tends to be objectionable in the home. Tubes with a much warmer spectrum, generally between 3000 an 3500 oK are now readily available (though they cost more); they often labled "kitchen and bath". For referance incandescents and halogens are about 3200 oK. Another factor, the importance of which depends greatly on the application is Color Rendering Index (CRI). It is subjective measure, on a scale from 0 to 100 of how accuratly colors are rendered. Incandescent lighting runs about 95 while flourescents run 70-85. Unforutnately the only real way to evaluate these factors is to visit a lighting showroom.
