I recently moved in a home that has a large front yard and a small narrow backyard. I am having a drainage problem with the back yard.
This is a ranch house that is the shape of a square "U." The backyard is surronded by trees that sit on my neighbors property, but the limbs and branches extend over my lawn providing me with plenty of shade and very little sun. I was thinking perhaps this could be one of the problems. There is grassy areas in the backyard but it is mainly in the outer areas and tend to be a little higher than the area that the rain settles on. The yard dries up normally with 24-48 hours depending on the temperature. My question is, would rebuilding with soil and sod solve this problem, trimming the branches on the trees to allow more sunlight to grow the grass, or try to find better drainage? I have assessed the gutter drains and there appears to be no area to re-route the gutters to allow the drainage to go elsewhere. Can you help?
