While I basically agree with BobF, some very heavy pieces can put such a lot of weight on a small area of a floor that they actually compress the wood fibers. Heavy furniture and small glides can do this to other kinds of flooring, as well. The secret to preventing problems is to spread the weight out over more square inches so you get less pounds per square inch trying to exceed the woods fiber tensile stress per square inch limit (the amount where it permanently dents).

You can get a variety of different devices to do this at a hardware store or home center. Your piano, with its cast iron harp or frame, will probably be the heaviest and the piece that is most likely to give problems. If it has roller casters on one side, that makes it even worse because the weight is concentrated in a smaller area. You will just have to see what style floor protector will be most appropriate with your piano. You may need one style for the front and another style for the back.

Other heavy furniture pieces may or may not pose problems. The more that weight is spread out over the floor, the better it is for your floor.
