toilet leak diagnosis

Using a pencil, place a mark at the water line inside the tank. Turn the water supply off. In about 30 minutes check the level of the water. If it is below the pencil line your problem is at the flapper/flush valve (at the center of the tank). If the water line is at the same spot as the water line your problem is at your refill valve (at the left side of the tank).

Once you've done this diagnosis, replace the valve that is causing you problems. For $10 replace the whole valve...don't waste time trying to repair them.
