Wood floors Posted by Ted G on March 13th, 2004 10:32 AM In reply to Wood floor stains by Henry in MI on September 3rd, 2000 09:21 AM [Go to top of thread]
I have a home constructed in 1958. The wood floors on the first level are a golden tone oak. For the most part they are still in really excellent shape. I use a small commercial floor wax machine on them periodically. I've done spot repairs that seem to vanish into the rest of the finish using some cut amber shellac. However, there is a wear area that is thin and I was going to clean and overcoat it. I might do a full refinish at a later date. I think the patch will work out fine for now. One problem. There were some carpeted areas at one time. Where they meet other rooms they used tacks. Most of the holes along with the tackless holes are already filled. However, one of the rooms was used as a kids room when they were young before we banished them to the second floor. The tacks in the doorway in that room rusted and left dark black stains in the wood. Strangely enough, some of it came out using a steamer. However, some is still left. I see a couple of choices. One is to clean and and fill as needed. The other, and this is one I haven't found a way to do, is to somehow chemically clean this up. Anybody have any ideas? I did try bleach.
