You will acyually lose money trying to paint your house yourself. {for the most part}. Think about it this way, if you, a non professional try to do this job the cost would be as follows.
>>>Supplies are roughly $150-$200, providing you have the ladders to handle stairways and other hard to reach areas.
>>>Materials are typically more expensive through a retailer than a pro painter. In Chicago the price for Benjamin Moore paint is roughly $40+/per gallon retail. Where as a lot of pro painters may give it to you for $30-$35/per gallon
On a typical 2500 sq. foot house roughly 25-30 gallons @ $5/per savings of $150. so far the savings is over $300.
>>>next would be your time, if you make $70,000/per year thats $1350/per week. The same 2500 sq. foot house would take roughly 4-5 days for a crew of 4 to paint, ceiling, walls and trim.
You would possibly pay in the range of $3000-4000 for the job plus material here in Chicago. Remember this also is just guestimate because there are alot of factors. so you would give up you hard earned vacation time, plus a few week-ends or more. put up with dust and upheaval for roughly a month or more for $1500 - 2000 out of pocket.
So in summation the $4000 job would actually cost you approximately $1500.00 and all you have to do is pick the color and dust a little at the end.
>>> Please don't forget the most important thing. QUALITY. If you compare even a good homeowner paint job to a professional one you will see a great difference. You also need to have the knowledge of how to repair or fix problem areas and which paints work the best on particular projects. This knowledge only comes with experience. I wish you luck,
Sincerely
