What is a weed?

Paul, a weed is something that is growing where you do not want it to grow. You can have a beautiful weeping cherry tree but if it's growing in the middle of where you want a vegatable garden, then it's a weed.

The weed mat material is made for garden spaces with ornamental plantings. Those are the shrubs and flowers like you have around your front door. People want to keep unwanted visitor plants out of those areas and do it for a long time. The weed mat is made for that. As for a vegatable garden, weed control is entirely different and depends on what you are planting. It really is a vast subject, particularly if you want to follow organic gardening. You really might want to do some reading on this subject since the answers are too long and involved for most of us to type out here.

By the way, that screened topsoil will have plenty of weed seeds in it. You will not have to seek out new weed seeds to handle for a long time.
