Blow the dust off of your dictionary and look up linear.
If you want ot measure linear feet of a curved sidewalk, where would you measure it? The outside radius? the inside radius? in the center? All three will result in different lengths.
You're wrong about the pasta...it swells with cooking and will in fact be longer (and thicker) after cooking.
