USE A GFI! A $6 gfi and an extra electrical box and 10 minutes is all it takes. Mount the box/gfi on the wall where the wires go outside or next to the breaker box (it's cheaper than a GFI breaker). The reason is the lights will get rained on, and some goof may try to change a bulb in the rain.
You ALWAYS switch the black/hot wire.
