popcorn is not necessarily a desirable texture, but you don't say what type of texture you already have. My advice, because ceilings are terribly unforgiving of people who aren't experts at it, is to hire a professional drywall contractor to come out and take care of this for you. It shouldn't cost a fortune, and is worth the headaches you are going to have by trying to popcorn it yourself!
