Carpet pads for steps.

I am thinking of putting carpet "runner/pads" down on only the run (horizontal) part of the step. (I have Pergo on the steps) Are carpet runner step carpet pads avail rather than the typical carpet runner which runs on the vertical and horizontal portion of the step? I have placed rope light under the bullnose of the the step and I don't want to run the carpet over the rope light.

Thoughts?
