sanding a mahogany staircase

I started sanding a mahogany staircase to get the old scratched up stain off. I was told I had to sand deep with a rough grit to get rid of all the darker areas where the old stain went deep otherwise when I restain it will be uneven. This has proven to be a big task. Should I continue sanding deep with a rough grit? I'm sixty percent finished. What should I do with the trim?
