My entire upstairs had tiles glued with what I would guess is black mastic to fir floors. I pulled up all tiles and spent weeks scraping the floors with wall scrapers. There wasn't alot of airborne particles involved so you don't need to worry too much about safety although its probably illegal to remove too much of it without a permit but none the less I did it and now I'm in the process of sanding the floors.
