My Neptune washer smelled like smoke and stopped spinning. The cause was the motor wax mechanism that is a common failure. After this fails, the large controller PC board in the upper portion of the machine (near the dial) burns out. Upon inspection, a resistor was toasted (R11). I asked factory for the resistor value so I could replace it and they say that information in proprietary and would not give it out. My friend at work found the R11 on his Neptune and the value is 3.9k ohms. I replaced this and the motor wax (part #22002119) and the resistor burned out again. I found that the resistor is used to bias a TO-92 NPN standard transistor base lead (middle) to ground. I soldered in a new NPN (any TO-92 power transister from Radio Shack will work) and then replaced the 3.9k ohm resistor again and it fixed the problem. Note-I used a 4.7k in parallel with a 22k ohm, twisted, soldered to get 3.9k since this is an odd-ball value. I saved the cost of a new board at $170. The motor wax mechanism was $22. Any questions, send me an e-mail at merlintds@aol.com. Good luck and thumb your nose at Maytag's proprietary problems built into their unit so that repairs can bring in more revenues. Happy soldering. Mark Middione
