It sounds like the wall that you want to take out is on the "main level", which supports the roof - correct??? If so, then you need to look at the roof truss system. Your trusses were set-up KNOWING what you wall system was going to be. Without knowing how they were designed to transfer the load, you run the risk of weakening your roof. May be a bad move....
