Burns on sink top

I had a cigarette burn on my sink top.

I know this sounds abrasive, but after trying several cleaners, this was my last resort.

I took a piece of sandpaper and lighty brushed it off. There are now small scratches on the sink top, but not nearly as noticeable as the burn was. Now, my sink top is all white, so I'm not sure how this would work on a marble sink top. Beware!
