painting basement

i just did this same thing in january. scrape/ brush the walls down with copper wire brush, then use a shop vac to collect dust of walls ( there may be alot). i just used a basement water barrier paint on the walls, and it looks great. my walls were really rough, so it took alot of paint, but was well worth it. i used a big brush to make sure i got all the high and low spots, but you could use a roller, with a thick roller on most of it if it is only 1/8th inch indents. i then got a floor paint to paint the floors. i think it was dutch boy. looks great, and you can get alot of colors. good-luck.
