Ok I'll try to describe myself a little better.
The floor joists sit on a top plate(2x4) in the center of the home and from there they span to the outside wall where they are nailed to a 2x4 stud.
There isn't a top plate it's just nailed in. Also there seems to me a board that is notched into the stud that the joists sit on. The board or plank is 6 inches wide and 3/4 thick.
The house is 80 some years old and this second floor has never been used for anything.
My plan for the space is a large (40X20) bedroom. I'm ashamed to say I've already framed in a closet and a small bathroom. :(

I really would like to finish this floor problem, when I had the roof replaced I had 5 skylights put in. It'll be a great bed room when all is done! If I can fix this floor
