refinishing kitchen cabinets

I saw a process at a local home show where they come in and take all the doors off the cabinets, install new face boards (1/4 inch thick) to the fronts of the shells, and then install newer doors. This looks like a practical approach to refinishing kitchen cabinets, which just about any handyman could do with a minimal amount of tools.
Does anyone have any experience in this type of refinishing and with any pro/con discussion points?
