New roofing technologies

I have purchased a house that has 1" x 4" laths with a wood shingled roof with a paper shingled roof over that. The roofing material needs to come off because of age. I am looking to put a new roof on the house and I was wondering the advantages and disadvantages of a sheet metal roofing system. Will the roof have to be sheathed throughout? Please advise.
