Removing of screwless plate doorknob

I try to insert a small phillips head screw driver into a small hole in the stem of the doorknob on the side which has the key hole.
I cannot get any movement when I push. Is it possible someone before me broke something off in the slot making it unable to move?
I am ready to us a slug hammer.
Help.
