Okay, the backerboard HAS to hang 1/2" above the rim of the shower pan, so that water cannot wick up the drywall and seep in behind the shower. It's okay that the bottom row of tiles won't be fully on the drywall (I thought this was wierd too). The drywall and shower rim shouldn't be touching.
