Old Wool Attic Insulation Posted by Paul Roberts on April 6th, 2004 07:42 AM
I renovating a living space above our dettached 2-car garage. The garage was built in the 1940s era. Up in the attic is old wool insulation. The plastic covering is punctured and torn all over due to animal visitors and age. The plastic seems possibly cheap and/or old, since a loose knot from one of the rafters had no problem puncturing the plastic when dropped onto it from a height of 3 feet. The insulation is a mess. The wiring is very old, and done haphazardly.
My gut feeling is that I should completely remove all of the old insulation from the space, clean it completely, and replace the old wiring and insulation. My question: Is it wasteful to throw away the old insulation? For example, can the old wool insulation be saved and later blown into the walls?
