Hot Water baseboard heat systems.

Is there anyway of checking to see if my system is working at its best. My system runs under my house through the crawl space. The pipes are not insulated. I also have the old cast iron radiators on the first floor and copper on the second. When should I be thinking of replacing the boiler?
