how many coats of poly are you useing?

you should be lightly sanding with 220 grit between coats of poly after 6-8 hours dry time, wipeig with tack cloth after sanding

try not to disturb the room with fast walking, slaming doors, dropping the sandpaper box on dusty table, shakeing out the sand paper and other things that can stir up the dust, leaVE THE room as soon as your done recoating and dont come back till the poly is dry.....even clean your brush elsewhere....GET OUT!

if you got forced hot air heat or a/c? cover the vent and tape it up till your done

also a good clean up of the work area the day before(leave time for dust to settle) you start applying finish would not hurt

if you dont have tack cloths(use alot, discard when they loaded) use a lint free rag dampned with mineral spirts(paint thinner).....open the tack cloths, then wipe and fold to clean area when loaded, fold again, and again and again, then throw away(gently as not to stir up dust), get new one and the same, and move carefully, then recoat and get the hell out the room till its tack free

could even wet the floor to keep dust down although you risk making a mess if the water drop get on your work

i find 3 coats to give a deep , rich finish and have no problems with dust, but i am careful.....and belive me there is pleanty of dust in my shop...i just knowengly dont disturb when applying finish

have you experemented with oil finishes? like linseed and turp or a poly oil like sam maloffs from rockler.com?

oil finishes are quite beautyful and easy to apply as well as fast drying...there not good for table tops though as they ring up under galsses and plates easy.

how about shelliac? or varnishes?...laquer is a pain in the ass, you really need dust free enveronment and a spray gun(now them spray guns really stir up the dust! phsssssssssssst!

good luck and let us know if you fare any better

anyway, any nibs or specks you have now on any poly piece can be lightly sanded out with 220 as i say above and recaoted with poly, smoothing out. dont worry...just do as i say above and you can save the piece
