Removing stain

Hi, again, Sue. Removing stain is difficult and uses some materials that really require following directions exactly. The first thing that you would have to do is remove the poly. I'm not familiar with the Ronson's product. What kind of dye is it--oil, water, or alcohol based? Are you sure that it is a dye and doesn't have pigment in it? You may be able to go to a darker color, it that's acceptable. What color do you have and what do you want?
As far as the dog, keeping it's nails clipped will help. Since it might have some ideas about that, 3 coats of oil based poly is the next best thing but nothing will last forever. No question that it does take a while to do stairs with oil based poly.
