Avanti Hamption Bay Ceiling Fan Remote Switch Wiring

Need help in understanding how to wire the remote switch from my Avanti fan. Directions indicate to install the two black wires to the phase wire and do not connect any wires to the nuetral. When I do this the fan does not work. Any suggestions are welcome.
