Ally paint job Posted by Cirmah1 on April 11th, 2004 01:09 PM In reply to painting fiberglass by ally on March 4th, 2004 07:10 PM [Go to top of thread]
Ally, to do this job right, you will be required to spend some big bucks for adequate equipment. If this is a one time thing, you might be cheaper to talk to a reputable paint shop to at least do the paint gun work. Cost of a good paint gun, compressor and paint materials (which are not cheap anymore)all will have to be considered in the totals,...sandpaper, surface prep materials like Prepsol, primers, reducers, catalysts, basecoat/topcoats, and clears. I'm repainting just the deck area of my jet boat,...I already own a large compressor, water separators, regulator, hoses, full coverage mask & disposable suit to protect me from the catalyst fumes and additionally, I'm already at $400.00 for a Sata paint gun, and over $200.00 in paint materials just for a 4 foot by 6 foot area. If you do not plan on painting anything else, go to a paint shop, you will be cheaper. Be sure you use a good paint gun, and a dust free area to paint in. The compressor you use will have to be large enough to keep up with the flow demand of your paint gun. You might want to look at one of the newer RP or HVLP guns available now. The RP guns are reduced pressure, handle like the older paint guns, but will still deliver 65% or more of the paint to the surface resulting in less overspray and less cost of materials. It might help to lightly wet down your floor before you paint. Surface preparation is vital. If the boat has been waxed, it will need to be washed with a hot soapy solution and then cleaned thoroughly with a surface preparation liquid available from the paint store. This is extremely important. If you don't, then go ahead and count on getting fisheyes in the paint, guaranteed. Do not touch the finished surface with your fingers or hands, they will leave an oily residue. After prepping, use a good primer that will fill sanding scratches, and block sand smooth. Again, wash and surface prep. (All attaching hardware and voids will have to be blown out thoroughly with an air gun to remove trapped trash before the cleaning) Use the right mixtures of paint as recommended, letting them just get tacky between coats, again do not touch with your fingers except on the masked paper areas. Finish with clear, and then, if you so desire, finish sand with 1000 to 1500 grit wet or dry with a light water sand and then buff out to a shiny finish. I apologize that I did not see your request until Easter weekend, which was also the weekend that I was going to paint mine. If time had allowed, I would recommended that you get your hands on the House of Kolor video "Kustom Painting Secrets". It is awesome, and every painter should own this video. Anyway, I hope things go well for you. Was this post helpful? Yes: or No:
